Despite it’s skyrocketing incidence, depression continues to be a stubbornly misunderstood and highly stigmatized condition. In this personal essay the author describes his struggles to obtain effective diagnosis and treatment for a sudden and debilitating mid-lifetime fall into depression, and how the destructive stigma associated with this condition makes ordeals beyond the many challenges of the disorder itself.
